Quiet Hands, Serene Mind: The Peaceful Art of Kumiko

  • Coppermine Woodworking 106 Ladeau Road Norwich, VT, 05055 United States (map)

One Day Workshop: Saturday, November 19 OR Sunday, November 20, 2022

1pm-5pm

Offered in partnership with Alex Thorngren & Coppermine Woodworking

Try your hand at the traditional Japanese craft of kumiko. The subtle precision of this artform is a peaceful way to engage both mind and hand.

In this class, students will learn the basic techniques of this centuries-old Japanese woodworking art form.  We will cover some basic hand tool skills, safety, and then spend the bulk of our time together building the traditional hemp leaf (asa-no-ha) pattern.  The asa-no-ha pattern incorporates all the fundamental skills needed for future exploration of the kumiko art form.  At the end of the workshop, you should leave with a finished decorative panel.

Price includes all materials. Tools and jigs will be provided for use during the workshop.

Jigs and/or additional kumiko panel strips are available for purchase from Coppermine Woodworking, yet are not required for participation in this workshop.

Kumiko requires being able to see and work with small pieces of wood. We recommend that you bring reading or other corrective lenses for close-up work if your vision necessitates it.

This class is open to all skill levels and requires all participants be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
