Block printing while traveling can be a great way to experience a new place. It helps you take in the surroundings and notice details you wouldn’t otherwise see. Learn about and practice with materials and techniques you can take with you on your next trip to commemorate and more deeply live in the moment during your travels. Bring your ideas and dreams for where you are going and/or images and impressions from places you have been. Leave with a series of postcards and watercolored block prints commemorating your past or future trip, a series of rubber stamps to use again, techniques to bring art-making with you on your next trip.

Learn how to make a Coptic-style hand-sewn book using vintage discarded book covers, turning an old item into a beautiful new sketchbook or journal! Coptic binding is one of the oldest bookbinding methods in history, and deceptively simple - the flexible binding allows the book to open flat, and the exposed looping stitches create a beautiful braid-like effect. No prior bookbinding experience is required.

Supplies: $25 supply fee payable to Teaching Artist on the day of the workshop.

Join Sharon for an all-levels yoga class that will focus on simple exercises—many of which can be done from a chair—which focuses on countering the effects of crafting on the hands, arms, shoulders and hips. We’ll explore how movement might help us focus, create, and bravely send our ideas into the world! 

No previous yoga experience is needed. Much of our practice will be done seated in chairs or stools. Modifications will be taught for those who wish to work from the floor or yoga mat.

Printmaking has a long history as an important form of grassroots activism, as well as being a great way to connect with others and create community. In this workshop we’ll look at some images from social justice work of the past and get inspired to create community by getting the message out about causes we believe in. Bring your creativity and wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little inky. Class takers will go home with 25 tags that will elevate the holidays for their friends and loved ones this year.

Tired of the same old gift wrap? Then this class is for you! Paste papers are made by applying a mixture of paint and pigment to damp paper and then using tools to create pattern and texture on the surface. Different methods will be demonstrated to guide you as you create your own paste papers with vibrant colors. We’ll use methyl cellulose in a paste recipe that’s easy to recreate on your own. Work with acid-free paper, so you can even use the papers in your bookmaking or other craft projects.

Each participant will leave class with a collection of paste papers and a basic knowledge of paste paper technique. You will receive a detailed handout and resource list for all materials we use. No previous experience is required – this is a great class for a beginner.

Nothing says “happy holidays” like a handmade card, and nothings says handmade better than letterpress! Using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and illustrations, you’ll design a single-color card and print it on a printing press that started its working life in 1892.

At the end of the day, you’ll take home 25 handmade cards (plus envelopes) in plenty of time to get them sent to friends and family before the holiday season gets too busy. Class takers should come with an idea of a short phrase (no more than 10 words) that they’d like to use in their card design, and wear clothes that they don’t mind getting a little inky.

Print and make your own holiday ornaments. Design and carve a stamp to create beautiful 3D ornaments. You can use your ornaments to decorate a tree, a window, or you can even fill them with treats for a homemade Advent calendar. Enjoy the simple pleasure of creating a decoration or gift from local materials that have been responsibly harvested. Utilizing techniques common to the Scandinavian and Russian style of basketry, you will craft birds and stars from strips of inner bark from the paper birch. Included is a discussion on how the material is harvested and prepared. For students, ages 14+.

This introductory calligraphy workshop will help you get started with the basics of modern calligraphy. Learn the fundamental details of this art form. Learn how to hold a pen for optimal results, the basic calligraphy strokes and how to form letters and words. No experience necessary!

Each student will receive a pen holder, a beginner-friendly nib, ink, and practice worksheets to keep.

Complete a small project to take home, as well as have the option to join a private Facebook group to continue the fun.

This class will cover all the basic elements of stamp-making: design, carving, stamping. You’ll leave with several prints and a carved stamp to take home and use for more.

Learn how to make beautiful handmade paper out of recycled scrap paper, plant fibers, and flowers! We will go through the hand papermaking process step-by-step: understanding different types of fiber, how to source and process fibers, making pulp, forming sheets, adding decorative inclusions, and pressing and drying the sheets. Everyone will make several pieces of paper to use for their own art and craft projects, for writing letters, or simply to appreciate as art in its own right.

Please wear clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet!
